Although nowadays South Korea is the eleventh economic power in the world, Korean gastronomy plays an essential role in its diplomacy. It reflects the interactions and power relations between Korea and the countries around it.

Korean gastronomy was reinvented during the preparation for the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 to promote tourism in Korea. The gastronomy policy evolved rapidly in the 1990s thanks to a policy of worldwide promotion of Korean cuisine because the notoriety of South Korea did not sufficiently reflect its economic growth. Nowadays, in diplomatic and cultural events such as receptions at Korean embassies or cultural centers abroad, Korean gastronomy occupies a prominent place.
